William Rose was
born in 1852 in Missouri to Thomas Rose and
his wife Elizabeth. William's future wife, Charlotte
Scudamore was born in Ohio in 1851. In 1856,
William was brought with his sisters to Sutter,
California, where he grew up. Charlotte and
William met and married in 1870 and moved to Lake
County, which had been separated from Napa County in 1861.
Robert Lee
Hudson was born in St. Helena CA in 1865 and married
Annie Rose, who was born in 1873 to William Rose and his wife
Charlotte. The couple was married in May 1897
in Lakeport, CA and had five children. (See
related story about Rodney Hudson here)
One of those
children, their third, became Dan's paternal
grandmother, Frances. She met and married a
charming Italian, Giuseppe Caporicci, and had three
children: two sons and a daughter. They
purchased a farm with orchards in Gordon Valley,
Napa County, in 1929 where they raised their family
during the 20th century. Joe Capp (name
Americanized) made wine in
the basement of the farmhouse as his family had done
in the Abruzzi region of Italy for centuries.
One of their sons,
Robert Lee, was Dan's father. He was born in
Oakland, CA in 1920 and died in Napa County in 2004
at home, after converting the family farm back to
vineyard in the early 1970's. It remains
planted in vineyards to this day.
